Hillel Talent Show!

The Hillel Talent Show was an endeavor set up by some of the older students. They posted sign-up sheets around the school, created a sign to advertise, and judged the show. 

So many of the students participated and fun was certainly had by all. 

We had joke tellers, a mime, actors, hip-hop dancers, jumping rope expert, Irish dancer, Middle Eastern dancer, magician, and a bowler. 

Clearly, we have a wide variety of talents at Hillel!

Art with Mrs. Martin

As you probably know, Mrs. Martin is both a classroom teacher for intermediate and the art teacher for the school!

She started out the year teaching the students that they can use art to express themselves. She taught about warm colors versus cool colors as well as about different types of lines they could use in their artwork.

Students chose to decorate their names in either warm colors or cool colors and included different types of lines.

Then, Mrs. Martin taught them how to draw a self portrait. They determined which lines to outline in permanent marker and then used water colors. The backgrounds were done in the opposite color scheme as their decorated names.

For instance, if a student used warm colors for his name, he used cool colors for his self-portrait background.

Plants and Writing

Plants and Seeds

Our class has really gotten into plants over the past couple of weeks. The projects have stemmed from our discussion about Tikkun Olam and ways we can make the world more beautiful. We have discussed what plants need and we did an experiment with seeds to determine why plants need sun, water, soil, and air. We have done research on our i-pads about what vegetables are ok to plant in the Autumn/Winter and how to grow plants in doors. We have started to sprout potatoes and in a few weeks we will plant our potato sprouts. We are in discussion on what to do with our potatoes after they grow. I will keep you updated in a couple of weeks with more pictures!

Writing

During the morning we have writer's workshop. We have been focusing on small moment stories and how we can bring our stories to life. The students have an opportunity to share their stories with the class. On Fridays the students have free write Fridays where they can write about any topic (fiction or non-fiction). Last Friday a few of the students wanted to combine their stories to make a book. I was proud of the way the students worked together to come up with a story about going to the circus. They were positive in their feedback with each other and helped each other bring their story to life.
